Below are some of the most common dental problems Dr. Windham treats at our office in Little Rock, AR.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, which is also known as dental caries or cavities, is the second most common disease after the common cold, but it’s also a disease that is highly preventable. When foods high in sugar and carbohydrates are eaten, they leave deposits on the teeth which bond with the bacteria that is present in the mouth to form plaque. This combination of deposits and plaque forms harmful acids which eat away at the protective enamel on teeth, resulting in tooth decay. Regular brushing and flossing and visits to your Little Rock dentist will help you prevent tooth decay.

Sensitive Teeth

Teeth naturally expand and contract in reaction to changes in temperature. People who have sensitive teeth feel irritation or pain when they consume hot and cold foods and beverages. Over time, the enamel on teeth can wear down, the gums can recede, or the teeth can develop tiny cracks to expose the interior of the teeth and irritate nerve endings. Simply breathing cold air can be painful for people with extremely sensitive teeth.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal or gum disease is caused by the harmful bacteria present in dental plaque. Signs of gum disease are consistently bad breath or a foul taste in the mouth. The gums are often red, swollen, and bleed easily in the earliest stage of periodontal disease which is called gingivitis. As the disease progresses to periodontitis, the teeth can loosen and fall out or require extraction by your dentist. One of the best ways to prevent periodontal disease is to consistently do a good job of brushing and flossing and visit our Little Rock dentist every few months for routine examinations and cleanings.

Bad Breath

Bad breath or halitosis is often caused by poor dental hygiene. If food particles are not brushed or flossed away after eating, they break down to cause foul smelling breath. While short-term bad breath can be caused by eating certain foods like garlic or onions, consistently bad breath may be a sign of gum disease or other serious problem.

Canker Sores

Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are small sores in the mouth that have a white or gray base encircled by a red border. A canker sore which can recur, generally lasts for a week or two. Treating a canker sore can be done by using an antimicrobial mouthwash or a topical agent recommended by our dentist.

Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic issues stem from an improper bite or malocclusion and can be inherited or acquired over time. Some of the most common causes of malocclusions include crowded teeth, missing teeth, extra teeth, misaligned jaws, injury, trauma, developmental issues, or an undesirable habit like thumb or finger sucking.
